As spring arrives, many of us are turning our focus to our lawns, readying them for the sunny days ahead. Lawns can be tricky to manage, particularly if they’re uneven.
However, a gardening expert has shared how to achieve a lush, bump-free lawn this summer, with the secret lying in the preparation, which can start now, reports the Mirror.
Gardening guru Michael, known as @themichaelgriffiths on social media, revealed his solution that utilises a blend of sand, soil and compost. He stated: “It’s one of the easiest ways to make a lawn look instantly better without re-turfing.”
To level a lawn, Michael began by preparing the area, mowing the grass “really short” to a height of two to three centimetres.
Michael elaborated: “This makes it easier to apply top dressing and you get better visibility of any low spots.”

He then ensured he had his topsoil, sand and compost at the ready. The expert advised combining the materials in a two-to-one part mix, meaning two parts topsoil, two parts sand and one part compost.
Michael explained: “This combination provides bulk drainage and nutrients to help the grass flourish.” Once mixed together, spread it over the previously mowed bumpy area.
He then levelled the mixture using the back of a rake or a lawn-levelling rake. Make sure the mixture is evenly distributed across the lawn.
Michael then walked on top of the mixture to press it into the ground. He mentioned that you can repeat the steps if necessary to ensure all bumps are covered and a level surface has been achieved.
The social media specialist advised: “Finally, water in gently to help the mix settle. And if it’s needed, you’re now ready to reseed your lawn.”

Michael informed his audience: “If your lawn feels more bumpy than flat, don’t rip it out, you can level it.
“A simple top-dressing mix of sand + soil + compost brushed into the low spots helps smooth the surface while keeping the grass growing through.”
One follower queried whether the timing was appropriate for implementing his guidance. Michael responded: “Perfect time to do this now – still probably a little too cold for grass seed but in about 2 weeks it’ll be fine. So you can do this now to get ready.”
Another viewer remarked: “Perfect, I got a quote for this that was over £2k which I couldn’t justify. This is brilliant I’m going to attempt myself. Thank you so much for posting.”
