If your seeds just sprouted, this is the stage where most gardeners make mistakes that can kill their seedlings fast. In this video, I’ll show you exactly what to do after germination so your seedlings grow strong instead of weak, leggy, or collapsing.

We’ll cover the most common problems people run into right after sprouting — from poor lighting and watering mistakes to overcrowding and airflow — and how to fix them before it’s too late.

Whether you’re growing basil, tomatoes, peppers, or pretty much anything from seed, these simple changes can make the difference between thriving plants and starting over.

🌱 What you’ll learn:
What to do immediately after seeds sprout
How to prevent leggy seedlings
The right way to water seedlings
When and how to thin or separate seedlings
Why airflow matters more than you think
How to avoid common beginner mistakes

  1. nice timing. Just got my seeds starting trays out & am setting up my double cups to start planting. I've use shop lights for years. Once I figured out where to place them (one of your videos actually) I quit having issues. oscillating fan helps too.

  2. 1st of all, I absolutely LOVE your videos! So helpful!! Quick question: in terms of a fan to help strengthen seedlings, I plan to put my seedling trays in my kitchen window (I'm shopping around for a grow light too) but I had planned to run the ceiling fan in the kitchen to provide the "breeze" for the seedlings after they germinate. What are your thoughts on that? The seed trays will be about 20 feet or so from where the seed trays will be.

  3. Hello. I have some questions regarding seed lengths. I just had some peppers sprout. Would you still remove the humidity dome and turn off the heat mat even though maybe only a 1/4 have sprouted? For celery and onions, do you thin these as well? Or are these easily transferable to other pots? I'm always afraid to do this, especially with onions, because they are considered a root vegetable, I believe. And do onions survive a light frost? I'm in zone five b and I've got a few weeks before I even hit the last frost date, but I wasn't sure if it's safe to plant them out yet.

  4. How close you should keep the light over seedlings depends on the light. “Strong light” is dependent. I have an 8 bulbs high out put T5 light. If I put it 2” above my seedling I would quite literally cook them. Know your equipment.

  5. This is really good! I’ve been seed starting indoors for a handful of years now and have been fairly successful but now I’ll be over the top! Thank you!

  6. Height really depends on the grow light, if I put my LED lights a few inches above my seedlings or any plants it'd destroy them. CFL's it'd be fine. I strongly suggest using a meter, don't need to even buy an expensive par meter, I use a cheap lux meter and with some math 30,000 lux is right where I like to be. You can lower the lights and dim them or raise them and turn them up for a wider spread. I also combing the natural sunlight with grow lights in a window to take advantage of the free sun. I do agree full light soon as the sprout, I've seen other information that says less light because they're tender and more sensitive but I disagree, doing that makes them leggy and less strong.

  7. This video is awesome thank you! This is my 4th year gardening (with the first year mainly buying starts). I suck at growing seedlings lol. This year I’m doing it in our garage which is pretty cold. I’ve left the seedlings on the mat bc it is probably 40 ish degrees in there and off and on turn on a nearby portable heater if evenings get under 30. Should I continue doing this or remove the mat completely?

  8. Hello , I like your videos. I planted some seeds 4 days ago and the tomato seedlings already sprouted. I have it on heating mat. When do I take off the heating mat. Because my garage is still cold?

  9. Thanks for the post man. I just had sprouts yesterday and this video was perfect I have a fan on everything with in and outs of the sun. It’s about 90 here in cali rn so we have to be a bit careful

  10. This was really timely for me. I actually am starting my seeds outside but in Park Seeds domes. I don’t have room inside and I have cats. Now that they are germinated, I am plan on just putting the domes at night or early evening

  11. Perfect timing! My seeds just sprouted yesterday and today! Domes off ✔️
    Under lights ✔️
    Temp reduced ✔️
    Thanks for great info 👍

  12. Yeah Brian, that's the best way to grow Onion, seed heavy and separate. Gives you so much more space for other seedlings

  13. Planted tomato seeds as recommended in a solo cup set up with a sandwich bag on top on a heat mat. Went away for 5 days and they were already sprouted and were a few inches tall! I was shocked. Immediately shut off the mat, removed the bags, and turned on the lights and fan. We’ve had wildly warm sunny weather (78) and put outside during the day with a brisk wind. They stopped lengthening and I’m hoping that once the true leaves sprout and I cut off the leggiest burying the stalks of those saved will do the trick.

Cayenne and poblano chili plants are looking really really good. Slow and sure under lights. True leaves started the other day after 2-3 weeks and transplanted to the solo cup set up. Set them outside the past few days too once it hit 75.

  14. I did all my starts in the outdoor milk jugs but this video of tending to seedlings reminded me to start opening the lids during the day, now that it's 60+ degrees.
