My hydrangeas have gotten out of control and they need a good trim. In previous years I’ve trimmed them back a little bit to get rid of old year’s flowers but now they’re climbing up my house and windows. I am getting conflicting answers online on how far back I can prune this type of hydrangeas. Any advice?

The harder I prune mine the bigger and stronger they grow.

These appear to be a smooth hydrangea. If so, they bloom on new wood and you can prune now and still get blooms this year. Many people typically prune these down 1/3 per year anyway.

Stupid question but what are the plants in front of the hydrangea? I’m hoping to plant some hydrangea bushes in the front of the house this year and want a secondary shrub in front of them like you have here. I’m also in zone 6A

What’s the plant in the foreground?
