I’ve dug out the grass of around 750 sq ft in my yard, planning to get two pallets of sod delivered tomorrow alongside 3.5 cu yd or soli/sand/compost mix.

I scraped existing weed/St. Aug out, but thought more soil removal might be needed to 1. Better level the slopes between side walk & tree, 2. Get better penetration for organics.

I might have found a good way of removing dirt somewhat effectively. A pro plugger was used to rapidly remove 2.5”x2” cores, then when full simply dump/discard into bag/wagon. This has proven to be a relatively low effort way to remove material fast.

Approximately 0.1 cu ft can be removed and dumped under 45s-1 min (averaged this for >45 min).

With that all said, now comes the “prep” questions – as I’m just winging this…

– Should I go through and knock down all the webbing level between the holes or apply the top dress directly over the top and spread in the holes?

– How much should I assume a soil/sand/compost mix to settle? I’m trying to get a feel for how much material to remove (I’d estimate around an 1” was already removed during the grass removal?)

Thanks everyone!

For those that might be interested, the app I used to survey and capture the area is Polycam – seems helpful so far in determining grade changes, etc.

I mean its a load of work that just takes the place of box blading/tilling and turning compost/sand mix back into the soil does. My concern is that you would be only filling <10-15% of the soil with mix. Thats a great way to transplant established grass to a bare spot though . . .

huh? the compost is going to decompose over time. this means these holes will end up as pits in your lawn at some point. enjoy!

Are you making little houses for moles or trying to go for the golfball lawn look?
