COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – There are simple steps to take to preserve the herbs you grow at home.

“You can use herbs any time of the year, but the best way to conserve them for future uses is to go ahead and try to dry them,” said Stephen Brueggerhoff with Texas A&M AgriLife. “There’s different methods that you can use to do that.”

Start by harvesting your herbs.

“The best way to do this is to grab some of the longest material that you can. Cut it to its length. Go ahead and bundle up a couple of branches and take some twine. Cloth twine is the best method to use for this,” said Brueggerhoff.

He says to take those bundles and hang them upside down.

“It’ll take a few weeks for it to dry completely. You’ll still have some oils that’ll be retained in the leaves that you can use in the future,” he said.

Once they’re dry, it’s important to store the herbs in an airtight container.

“Make sure that they’re completely dry,” said Brueggerhoff. “If they’re not completely dry then they have a chance of molding, even inside of an airtight container. And make sure that you label the container cause you’re going to forget what it is after a while.”
