The information is good except for attributing all this wisdom to Japanese farmers is bunk. I live in Japan and garden in Japan. I know Japanese farmers. They plant close together because land is at a premium. They use compost piles, they use greenhouses, they add inputs, they grow monocultures and they apply pesticides just like other commercial farmers. Because land is precious they plant things close together. Enlightened Japanese farmers do try to encourage the soil microbial life. Because fields are smaller most farmers use less large, expensive equipment but they don’t avoid it where it makes economic sense.
Climate in Japan is not harsh compare to other countries..hard working breed of people❤🎉
I plant herbs, chives, marigolds everywhere in my vegetable garden. It surely helps with reducing pests. I use neem oil and dish soap solution to minimize remaining pests and fungi. I dong till. The garden is covered with fallen leaves and grass clippings in late fall. During growing season, bee grass clippings are spread as mulch. Chicken manure is my go to supplement of fertilizer, which is cheap to buy. I always build trellis for climbing plants though. I found it easier to manage.
When weeding is no more a task, gardening becomes easy. It’s good to grow many varieties of vegetables. There are always some winners and losers every year.

Your flower pot example really gives you ONE edible crop. Basil is a seasoning, doesn't really fill you up. If you are going to pass information, find plants that do the same thing but are edibloe and filling. In these times, we don't need seasonings and flowers, we need food. Give a real solution for the pots.
