A surprise proposal stole the spotlight during Katy Perry’s Lifetimes Tour stop in New York City.
One of the most well-known and respected gardens in Massachusetts is open right now.
The Home and Garden Television network named what they think is the best garden in every state in the United States in 2024, and put them all in one list, naming the Edith Wharton’s estate, The Mount as the best in Massachusetts. And while it’s early in the growing season, you could plan a trip to see the grounds now.
The Mount, located in Lenox, Massachusetts, has been called the best garden to visit in the Commonwealth by HGTV, and for good reason, it’s a beautiful property with stunning greenery.
“We love gardens of all shapes and sizes (and know you do too!)” HGTV said. “And we just want to be sure you don’t miss any icons that could be right under your nose — or on your travel itinerary — when time is a finite resource.”
Here’s more on the Massachusetts garden HGTV called a must-visit.
The Mount, Edith Wharton’s home — Lenox, Massachusetts
HGTV chose The Mount as the best garden in Massachusetts because of how manicured and meticulously crafted the garden is, much like Edith Wharton’s prose in “The Age of Innocence.”
“Literary inspiration blooms in these three acres of formal gardens designed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist herself,” HGTV said. “Wharton applied the same principles of proportion and harmony to her landscapes as she did to her pioneering interior design work.”
You can find The Mount at 2 Plunkett St. in Lenox, Massachusetts.
“The Mount, built by Edith Wharton in 1902, is a historic house museum, cultural center, and public park,” The Mount website said. “We present over 100 programs year-round. The gardens and grounds are free and open daily from dawn to dusk.”
Unfortunately, the programs and guided tours won’t start back up until later in the spring; however, if you just want to take a weekend trip out to Lenox to see one of the prettiest places in Massachusetts on your own terms, The Mount might be your best bet.
If you’re looking for things to do at The Mount besides enjoying the pleasant scenery the garden provides on your own, the house museum’s website talks about a guided tour of the garden and the house itself that begins at 1 p.m. Eastern Time daily, once tickets open. You can buy 2026 tickets on their website in April.
“The gardens showcase Edith Wharton’s eye for beauty and design,” the website said. “Our guided garden tours highlight her original creation, as well as, the extensive restoration that brought these beautiful gardens back to life.”
