The fourth annual Spring Garden and Pet Show at Destrehan Plantation this weekend will feature on-site dogs and cats looking for their forever homes.
At the Big Easy Animal Rescue booth, attendees can meet dogs Remy, Yogi, Chance and Oscar and play with adoptable cats and kittens.
BEAR volunteer Annabelle Zakaluk said she is looking forward to the fun of seeing kids interact with the rescue animals.
“The event offers great socialization opportunities for our animals, and possible adoption,” Zakaluk said.

BEAR is a non-profit animal rescue and pet shop based in Marigny. Brenda Laura founded the rescue after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when there were many loose animals in New Orleans who required immediate care. Laura opened her first non-profit pet shop and rescue in the French Quarter.
The BEAR staff is composed entirely of dedicated volunteers, and the organization specializes in aiding, rescuing, fostering, administering medical care, and showering neglected and abused animals with love.
Zakaluk said 100% of the brick-and-mortar pet shop proceeds go back to helping more animals.
“We work hard to advocate for spaying and neutering, and we finance getting community animals fixed,” she said. “Our pet shop is unique because the cats roam freely during the day, getting socialization and exercise, with a higher chance of adoption because they can show their personalities. We always welcome anyone new who’d like to volunteer with us.”
The garden and pet show will take place at the historic grounds of Destrehan Plantation, located at 13034 River Road, on March 21-22.

The event is presented in partnership with the LSU AgCenter and Louisiana Master Gardeners and will feature more than 80 vendors offering houseplants, rare varieties, fruit trees, garden art, and pet accessories. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, with an admission fee of $5 per person. Tickets for children aged 5 and under are free.
This is the first year BEAR will participate in the garden and pet show.
We’re so excited,” Zakaluk said. “There are so many great activities, and it’s going to be beautiful this weekend.”
