We have had to start cutting down our bamboo, because our neighbours complained it was in their garden. (We didn’t plant it, and had no idea what a thug it is when we bought the house). But the garden is now feeling very overlooked. Our garden is slightly higher than the one behind us, and when I was hanging up the washing I felt like I was looking straight in their bedroom window. I love being out in the garden, but I’d like it to feel a bit more private. Obviously hedging would take years to grow tall enough. I’m happy to spend a bit of money to get the right effect sooner, but what should I be looking for? Are there any tall annuals I could grow whilst we sort out the bamboo? Feeling a bit dejected that my oasis is now turning into somewhere I feel self conscious.

Keep the bamboo and use a rhizome barrier to stop it going into your neighbours garden.

It will encourage the bamboo to spread along the fence, creating more of a screen.
