Peace lilies are known for their distinctive white flowers, but they can often look a little bare or even wilted in spring if they are kept in the wrong area of your home. Houseplants need a lot of sunlight if you want them to bloom again, but most people make the mistake of putting their peace lily on a windowsill or in a brightly lit spot.
These plants naturally grow in tropical rainforest under massive trees, and in the wild, they only receive filtered sunlight. This means their leaves cannot tolerate too much light, and when peace lilies are placed directly by a window, they become stressed and droopy. Kassi Kuppinger from Bath Garden Centre has warned that the best way to get a peace lily to bloom is to take a few seconds to move it near an eastern window.
She said: “Direct sunlight will easily scorch the leaves of your plant, so I would suggest placing your plant out of direct sunlight. I have a peace lily that sits six or seven feet away from an east-facing window, so it gets some slight, indirect light, and it is thriving.”
Why put peace lilies next to an eastern window?
Any east-facing windows in a house will receive a lot of morning sunlight, which tend to be weaker and a lot more gentle for plants like peace lilies.
Afternoon sunlight is more intense and therefore harsher, but the sun will move east as the day goes on, which will make an east-facing window a lot shadier.
East-facing windows will give a peace lily consistent but indirect sunlight, so it can store energy without being burned or stressed so you are more likely to get flowers this spring.
Simply place your peace lily on a table, worktop or desk a few metres away from an eastern window and the plant will thrive throughout the warmer seasons.
What room should you keep peace lilies in?
Peace lilies will do well in any room that gets enough light but is not too bright, so just keep them out of conservatories.
However, if you want to get the best possible flowers, then peace lilies like a humid environment and will really like a bathroom as long as there is a window where they can get light.
You can also place peace lilies in a kitchen, as a lot of humidity is left over after cooking, but it should be noted that you need to keep plants far away from fruit bowls.
Fruit contains a gas called ethylene that helps them ripen, but it also has an effect on plants and can reduce their lifespan and cause flowers to wilt before their time.
They also do well in a living room or bedroom, as long as they are placed near a windowsill, so you are more likely to get lush and healthy blooms on your peace lily.
