Spring starts on March 20, Friday coming. Time to look for plants and seeds if you are a gardener.

Coldspring Garden Club will hold its annual fundraiser on April 25 around the Courthouse Square. Mark it in your diary. Members of the Garden Club will be selling plants and seeds of all kinds. This popular organization will celebrate its 87th Birthday at the next meeting on April 2. The theme “Through the years of Coldspring Garden Club” will reveal some of the history of this remarkable Club and those gardeners who helped make it a success. It is certainly a part of Coldspring’s history.

As part of their commitment to the community, the Garden Club will sponsor Fish Friday lunch at the SJC Senior Center on March 20.

•SJC Master Gardeners present the Petals & Pathways 2026 Garden Tour on April 18 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 on the day of the tour, children 16 years and under are free. Tickets are also maps of the places to visit, ranging from raised bed gardens and free-ranging chickens at The Moore Garden on FM 945 to The Horse & Soul Garden on Highway 150. There are many other gardens to explore, go to the website or Facebook page. I will list more in next week’s column.

•The Women’s League of our county met last week with a very interesting talk by guest speaker Andrea Dowdell, who spoke on the value of natural healing using essential oils. She spoke about the chemicals we do not realize are hiding in our everyday cleaning products — food, dryers sheets and washing products.

Andrea said that looking on the list of ingredients on products is essential to make sure we are not unwittingly consuming harmful contents.

The lunch was catered by Mary Gray who will be catering the lunch for the Style Show to be held on April 9 at the Coldspring Community Shelter. Tickets are on sale for $25 at the Senior Center or from Women’s League members. Call Jessica Rutherford at (979) 412-3162 for more information or to donate to the silent auction.

This event is sponsored by Vaughan Real Estate Group. Fashions by Chico of Kingwood will be modeled by Women’s League members.

•On April 21 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Polk County Commerce Center in Livingston, Workforce Solutions will host Polk County Career Expo. If you are looking for a job or need to hire employees, this is a great resource for you. Contact Barbara Justice at bjustice@detwrk.org or Kathryn Pedigo at pccdirector@lit.edu to know more.

•Shepherd Community Market will hold its first market on Saturday, March 28, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the park by Shepherd Library. Forms are available online and at the Library or call me at the Chamber number.

I have heard from a couple of non-profit organizations asking if they could attend to give out information. Of course. This is a community activity bringing goods from home-based businesses of all kinds to a central place where they can sell, show or inform about their work.

•On Saturday last at Lake Station Missionary Baptist Church just outside of Shepherd, the service honoring the life of Quinters Andrews drew a very large crowd of family, friends and those who had been touched by his long career as a teacher.

Married for 60 years to the love of his life Christie Andrews, their children and grandchildren with brothers, sisters and a large extended family showed how much Quinters Andrews had meant to them. Powerful singing voices energized the congregation, and everyone received a beautiful program with photos of the family over many years enjoying family time together.

Coach Andrews was honored by some of his students too although most were grandfathers now. Coach retired in 2001 and was 88 years old. He and his wife Christie have been a great influence on many as they taught in Shepherd High School. Mrs. Andrews is on the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce Board and still a community-minded influence.

Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.

Yvonne Cones is president of the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Coldspring Chamber of Commerce.
