Gardeners interested in extending their growing season will have an opportunity to learn practical techniques during an upcoming educational program in Kingsport.

Lucas Holman, horticulture Extension agent and county director for UT/TSU Extension in Wilson County, Tennessee, will present a program titled “Cool Season Vegetable Gardening” on Thursday, March 19, at 7 p.m.

The event will be held at the Kingsport Higher Education Center and is sponsored by the Southern Appalachian Plant Society. The program is free and open to the public.

Holman will discuss ways gardeners can grow a variety of cool-season vegetables in Tennessee without waiting until spring planting time. The presentation will focus on practical topics such as planting schedules, supplies and recommended cultivars suited for the region.

Organizers say the program will also address gardening trends frequently shared on social media, offering guidance on which methods are useful and which may not deliver reliable results.

Holman previously taught high school agriculture, including greenhouse programs, for nearly 10 years before transitioning to Extension work about eight years ago. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Tennessee Tech University.

He and his wife operate a small farm where they raise Dorset sheep and grow daylilies and other unique perennials and shrubs.
