Former homeowner backfilled their in-ground pool with really gravelly, inorganic fill all the way up to grade, then planted sod. One year later after we moved in, a rectangular area started to die off quickly. I can barely get the tip of a shovel blade into the ground as it’s so full of rock and compacted. You can see the area traced in red.

This area is approximately 1,400sq ft and I’m assuming a contractor would need to take about 6-8” off the surface and backfill with good fill and top organic topsoil, then planted sod to match the zoysia in the remainder of the backyard.

I’m curious about how much this would cost. Hauling away the unusable fill material would be necessary so that’ll add up quick, I’m sure.

Any thoughts or advice?

More importantly, you want to break up the pool base so that it doesn’t cause the area to fill with water and flood.

That said, you can do this for as cheap as any excavator rentals in your area.
