I don't know why this is plaguing me. Can't seem to settle on best way to tackle this. What works for you?

This is an automatic reminder regarding r/dahlias Rule 3:

When reasonable*, posters should make a good-faith effort to identify which variety/varieties are shown in their photo(s). If you don’t know for certain, please say so. Someone will usually know!

*Common-sense exceptions to this rule will be honored, such as if the photo does not contain a blossom, or if your photo contains large volumes (such as in wide field shots).

If you’ve already done this, thank you! No further action required.

If not, please add a reply to this comment and confirm if you know the name of your dahlia variety/varieties shown in the photo(s). Alternately, if you’re uncertain of the variety name(s), it’s ok to say that, too.

Depends on how many plants and varieties you have. Some folks use numbers and spreadsheets for expansive collections, I use plastic tree tags that I can loop around a stake or stem of a plant.

For labeling tubers in storage, I just place a plastic growing tag in with the tubers (plastic wrap method) and that seems to work. I’m only growing a few dozen plants and maybe 15 varieties.

Happy to learn what other folks use!

It really depends on what you want your system to do for you. I’ve seen folks use survey tape (with writing), plastic stakes, tags, or bands (either written or printed, even printed with 2d barcodes linked to a plant database), and even popsicle sticks picked up from a thrift shop. (i tried; those work great for storage but rot over the season)

I have a modest collection (30+ dahlias depending on the year), and I keep a fair number of varieties year to year, assuming conditions allow. I want my tags to remain readable, w/ bonus points for reusable and recycleable. I prefer to avoid single-season plastic as much as possible.

Personally, I tried the plastic bands and found I didn’t like how they fade or degrade in the sun. Very brittle at the end of the year.
Same fading with survey tape, even when i think i have tagged low/in shade.

I tried these linked tags last year, and I think they are the winners for me. I used an old metal knitting needle like a pencil to write/emboss/engrave them. You could also use pen (on the surface only), but I think that would run the same fade risk as with other tags.
