I have this gum tree in my yard its been there 25+ years and we moved in 9 years ago. I've always been concerned about its height but can not cut it down due to a protective overlay being (close to a national park) it appears to be crack/split marks. I did have it pruned 3 years ago would that be from the spikes they wear when they climb the tree or something wrong with the tree itself?

Vertical cracks like these are usually superficial and can appear after heavy rains where the tree may experience a faster rate of growth. Torsional cracks that wrap around limbs or trunks are usually more concerning as they caused by mechanical stresses on the tree. That being said, I would still get an arborist to check it out if you’re worried.
Call an arborist to investigate (an actual arborist, not a tree lopper) if you want to salvage the rest of the tree. Alternatively skip that cost and get it trimmed/removed, a limb/trunk that large can cause a lot of damage or loss of life.
