Hi there,

Disclaimer, I am new to growing Dahlias and this will be my first year starting.

Long story short, I got a boxed package that said Dahlias from the grocery store (I know why you’re thinking, I was just too excited waiting for the actual bulbs I ordered from a farm). When I opened it up, inside the plastic bag was the bulb but also a really long white stem (?). I’m guessing it was warm enough and the inside the bag was moist enough for it to grow.

So I cut excess of that stem and planted it indoors. Now it looks like the picture. Will those new sprouts that came out of that original stem be okay? I’m not sure if the original stem is strong enough for those sprouts. The original stem is like “floating”

What should my next steps be?

This is an automatic reminder regarding r/dahlias Rule 3:

When reasonable*, posters should make a good-faith effort to identify which variety/varieties are shown in their photo(s). If you don’t know for certain, please say so. Someone will usually know!

*Common-sense exceptions to this rule will be honored, such as if the photo does not contain a blossom, or if your photo contains large volumes (such as in wide field shots).

If you’ve already done this, thank you! No further action required.

If not, please add a reply to this comment and confirm if you know the name of your dahlia variety/varieties shown in the photo(s). Alternately, if you’re uncertain of the variety name(s), it’s ok to say that, too.

Yes they’re ok but they’re lacking light. Move the plant to somewhere near a window.

If it were me I’d be taking the longest shoot for a base cutting and let the better shorter shoots grow on to flower.
