Bought a home 2 years ago and the back yard looks like mostly weeds (crabgrass I believe). I thought about dethatching but sounds like that wont solve my weed issue. What would anyone reccomend I do to make this an actual lawn? It gets very green in the summer but feels like lots of rough weeds. Do I kill it all and start over? (Located in NJ). Summer pics for reference

Your lawn, so your choice, but I would recommend just following the cool season guide from this sub’s sidebar. Pre-emergent needs to go down soon to prevent future crabgrass. Use a spray herbicide (find something that attaches to your garden hose) to kill existing weeds and deal with a patchy lawn until fall. Fall is the ideal time to plant cool season grass. It gives the seedlings three seasons to establish before summer heat tries to kill it.

It isn’t super fun to wait for the ideal time, but long term you will get better results with less effort/cost. Google a lawn maintenance calendar from your state extension office to help get organized and set date ranges for all of your lawn tasks.
