It’s arrived at that time of year when the weather is starting to get a little brighter and warmer, which means people are beginning to turn their attention to their gardens more. But, if you’re someone who suffers with pesky weeds, then you need to focus on them urgently as now is the time to try and rid them for good.
Nobody likes having weeds in the garden, as they’re annoying, unsightly and it often takes a lot of work to try and dispose of them. No matter how much effort you put in, they tend to come back within weeks, but a gardening expert says taking action in March could just prevent this from happening.
It’s not the only handy hack to have been shared recently either. Just days ago, Alan Titchmarsh also said there’s a simple way to stop weeds taking over your garden.
Senior Horticultural Content Manager at Fothergill’s Pim Dickson recently shared what people need to know. The brand has thousands of followers on Instagram, so the advice is really worth paying attention to.
Pam said: “The first job is dealing with all that moss and those pesky weeds that have crept in during winter. Give your lawn a good rake to lift them out; it’s surprisingly satisfying work.
“This isn’t just about making things look tidy. Getting rid of moss and weeds means your grass can actually breathe again, with air, light and water reaching the soil where it’s needed.”

She added: “If you only have a few weeds here and there, then simply dig them out, ensuring you get as much of the roots as you can. A narrow spade hoe will help you do this with ease, or alternatively a hand trowel.
“Follow these straightforward steps, and you’ll have a lawn that’s ready for summer, whether that’s family barbecues, kids playing or simply somewhere nice to look at with your morning cuppa.”
Little you may know, the earlier you pay attention to your weeds, the better. As we step into spring, there are some jobs that really need to be completed sooner rather than later.
There’s good reason why you should step into action. Early spring is actually one of the best times to pull weeds out because the soil is damp and soft.
This allows for easy, root-complete extraction. Removing them before they establish deep roots or set seed prevents them from spreading later in the season, and it’s super important to target weeds early before they fully develop.
Why does this help?
The soil is soft in spring, which enables weeds to slide out easily. This provides a better chance of the entire root being removed.
It can also help to prevent spreading as, weeds have not yet set seed, so pulling them reduces the next generation of weeds. They are also much smaller at this time of year, which means they’re easier to work with.
In fact, the best time to work with them is after a good spring rain. Getting the job done in March is one of the most effective ways to stop them from growing and taking over your garden later in the year.
The month is considered a prime time for weeding because winter annuals are maturing and spring weeds are just beginning to germinate, making them small, weak and easy to remove before they form deep roots.
So now is the time to act if you want to ensure your garden is tidy and weed-free this summer. It’s a job worth doing to better the look of your garden.
