Redding Man Killed After Two-Vehicle Rollover Crash on Interstate 5 Near Bonnyview Exit

Redding, CA (March 16, 2026) — A 52-year-old man from Redding lost his life Saturday night after a violent two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 involving 72-year-old Penny Gardener.

According to the California Highway Patrol,, the collision happened just before 9:30 p.m. on the northbound lanes of I-5 near the South Bonnyview Road exit.

Reports say that a 2019 Hyundai driven by Gardener was traveling north in the center lane at a high rate of speed. At the same time, the Redding man was driving a 1977 Ford sedan in the right lane.

Investigators said the Hyundai suddenly moved into the right lane and struck the rear of the Ford. The impact forced both vehicles off the roadway, where they overturned.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found both vehicles heavily damaged. The Redding driver suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Authorities temporarily closed a lane of the freeway while crews responded to the scene and cleared the wreckage.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officials are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the CHP Redding office.
