In Garden Room Part 9 – First Fix Electrics & Wall Insulation, we go inside and tackle the essential first fix electrics and wall insulation. Watch as I run power and networking cables safely, upgrade from a radial to a ring main circuit, and install 70mm PIR insulation with a 25mm overlayer to reduce thermal bridging.

We also add Rockwool in the roof for soundproofing and rain noise reduction, plus tips on sealing gaps and creating solid fixings around windows and doors.

  1. Two thoughts (probably to late)

1.) Watching two walls the coldest point is usually in the corner where two outside walls are meeting. Without windows that's the point where dew/mold is most likely to occur. "Round corners" would be ideal in those regards… 😉

2.) Wires. I'd probably use pipe/hose (with cord inside) where the wires can be easily pulled through with a bit of space (and an additional cord) left for future wires i didn't think of.

    Good luck

  2. I fancy one of those masks your partner was using to install the rockwool. Can you tell me what brand it is and if she would recommend it.

  3. Cables aren’t run through studs anymore, a service void is now created, by fixing battens to the studs for the plaster board and leaving a gap for cables or pipes to pass through, yes you’ll lose 25mm on each wall but that’s how it’s done👍

  4. Really enjoying this series. It’s fascinating seeing how you’ve approached the wiring and insulation in the garden room — lots of useful ideas for anyone thinking about building their own garden office.

  5. Great video, I took ages to decide where to put the cables in my garden room. Finally decided to put them at the front of the PIR insulation. The reason being, ‘potential for moisture to build up’ in the void at the back, in what is seen as an unvented space…..(although the risk is relatively low). The electrician ran drops to sockets from the (ceiling service void) so no drilling the studs horizontally. Many ways to boil an egg, eh!

  6. I’m watching these videos as just starting build my first workshop (much smaller than yours). You said the nail gun and compressor were good but cheap, any chance you could share what they were? Thanks – wrong video, I’ll put it o the right one 😊

  7. The idea of a California Corner was that you can get insulation deep into the corner as well as having a solid fixing for plasterboard. The problem is you have a stud too close to that corner – 20cm isn't enough room to reliably get insulation. Changing the stud positioning or insulating the corner before bringing the walls together would avoid this. I guess there will always be something which can be overlooked with a project of this size.
