March Garden Tour Behind the Scenes | Beginner Garden Jobs for March (UK Zone 9a)

March is such an exciting time in the garden as everything slowly begins to wake up and we start preparing for the growing season ahead. In this video I’m taking you along for a March garden tour and sharing some of the behind-the-scenes jobs we’re working on in our garden right now.

Gardens are never perfect and there is always plenty happening behind the scenes before the flowers and borders really come to life in spring and summer. I always think it’s important to share the reality of gardening, especially if you’re a beginner gardener, because creating a garden takes time and there are always projects underway.

In this video I show you what’s happening in our budget family garden in Sussex (UK growing zone 9a) and talk through some of the jobs we are tackling this month to get ready for warmer weather.

In this March garden update you’ll see:

🌱 A look around the garden as spring approaches
🌱 My husband Ben laying some new decking
🌱 Our new fences going up
🌱 A new outdoor eating area we’re creating in the garden
🌱 Installing a new irrigation hose in the border to help with watering this summer
🌱 The real behind-the-scenes work that goes into preparing a garden for the growing season

It’s always a busy time of year and I love sharing the progress along the way. I’ll share another update in the next few weeks so you can see how all of these projects are coming together once everything is finished.

If you’re a beginner gardener, I hope this video gives you some inspiration and reassurance that gardens are always evolving and improving over time.

Happy gardening 🌸
Sophie

  2. I am so glad I have found your channel, you have given me so much inspiration to get jobs done. Thank you to you and hubby for the giggles and garden knowledge ❤

  3. Thank you Sophie, really enjoyed looking around your garden and all the hard work that goes into making it beautiful ❤

  4. Thanks for the lovely tour 🤗, my dahlias have started to shoot!! Have you shown us how to take cuttings? If so I'll look back to previous videos, thanks 😊

  5. All water tanks near us people want £50-£100! Crazy you got them for free. Also could you link the irrigation system you got please

  6. I really enjoy your channel. It feels so relatable. My garden is very small and mostly containers, so I find so much inspiration from how you garden.

  7. Youre channel is a gem of a find Sophie, I have been binge watching! I thought I was a fairly experienced gardener but I have picked up so many really good tips from you – I am now doing all my dahlias in plastic bags and am trying the snail method of sowing seeds 😍 Can I ask which brand of paint you use on your exterior wood? I am really struggling to find a good one which covers well.

  8. It was really interesting to see ‘work in progress’ at this time of year, having seen some of your previous summer tours. What delightful leafy gardens you have and after last year’s drought how well they have survived. I myself lost a few shrubs especially my large beautiful Fatsia. Good luck with all your plans. Happy gardening.

  9. thanks Sophie really great content i love the living wall must look into that some great ideas new to your channel its great keep up the good work Ben 👍

  10. Hi. Love the tour. Interested to know which is the front of the house & which is the back.??
    How do get out 😂 It’s so lovely & secluded !! 😊

  11. Last spring I had been on sick leave with burnout for three years, mostly bed-bound, when I suddenly started noticing the small garden outside my apartment (I live on the ground floor of a rental).
During the summer I slowly started moving perennials around and imagining what I could create there despite the small space and the limits of renting. I had never experienced anything like the feeling of digging in the soil and watching the garden start to bloom. That’s where my healing really began.
I’m now in my fourth year of burnout and still on sick leave, but the work I did in the garden last year gave me hope again.
I found your channel last autumn and it has inspired me so much. I love how you show what gardening really looks like – not just the perfect parts, but the real process, the experimenting and the creativity in small spaces. Your ideas about using pots and containers have given me so many new ways to think about my own little garden.
Thank you, Sophie. You inspire me so much and your videos genuinely bring me joy. I’m really looking forward to this gardening season.

  12. Silly question…any way you could do a video about where to put dahlias please? How big they grow, spacing in containers, placement in borders etc? I've ordered 6 types for the first ever time (for which I hold you entirely responsible 😂) & because of your videos, I feel confident starting them off before they go out. However, it's just occurred to me I don't actually know what I'm going to do with them when they go out 😂 Thank you! Love your videos – soothing & inspiring in equal measure ❤

  13. Found you a few weeks ago. I cut my grasses down, so thank you. You're very inspiring. Is your house 70s or later? I do like it.

  14. Wow! You Guys are 24/7 Non-Stop. Gardens look and fantastic and will really explode with colour over the next few months. It helps a lot having a DIY wizz like Ben… If he ever has a spare day (which I doubt), please send him my way 🙂…. Great content!

  15. After ten years of battling against the clay in our garden we’ve decided to take our turf up this year. I can’t wait. It’s basically a boggy mess all year round. We’re going to get some proper drainage in and gravel it, then I can get some plant pots and a raised vegetable patch going in what was otherwise a dead patch of garden. I’m so looking forward to it ❤
