Want a large sweet potato harvest without digging up your entire garden? Try growing them in a large grow bag or container.
Sweet potatoes grow exceptionally well in loose, well-draining soil, which makes grow bags perfect for producing healthy tubers while saving garden space.
Start with a 15–25 gallon grow bag or container with good drainage. Fill it with a light soil mix made from potting soil, compost, and a small amount of perlite or coco coir to keep the soil airy.
Plant 3–4 sweet potato slips around the edges of the container, burying the stems several inches so multiple nodes are underground. Place the container in full sun and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which encourage leafy growth instead of tubers. Instead, feed lightly with a balanced or potassium-rich fertilizer once or twice during the growing season.
Another important tip is to keep the vines from rooting into the ground outside the container. Gently lift and redirect them so the plant focuses its energy on developing tubers inside the bag.
After 90–120 days, simply dump the bag and enjoy an easy harvest—no digging required.
