My wife and I recently got 20 acres and are going to build a house this summer. The property currently has a nice pole barn and a few outbuildings in need of repair. We were brain storming how we would like to setup our homestead and what makes the most sense. This is our current design. Any advice as to what we might regret or what we are forgetting would be awesome! The chicken is right by one of the old out buildings. We plan on wrapping it in steel and creating a nice large run for the chickens. The fire is where we plan on putting in a gazebo/fire pit area. Our last farm we made the mistake of putting the garden on the other side of the property so it became much more of a chore to tend too. This time we plan on putting it nice and close.

Are you keeping the trees in the pasture? I wouldn’t cut any trees unless you need to, they grow back but it takes a while, you already have pasture if you need some without trees.

What animals are you putting in that “pasture with access to barn”? Those trees are likely sacrificed for most animals. Even horses will destroy them out of boredom.

What’s at the end of the shooting range? And 1000yds out behind that?

It looks like a solid layout but you might want to consider adding a winding stone pathway that connects the house to the garden and gazebo to create a natural flow. Setting up tiered raised beds in that garden space would also look beautiful and save your back. Whats to plan South? Is that a road or a river or?

I personally would not like a wonky pasture fence covering a quarter of my property. I’d focus on getting a fence around the whole 20 acres first. These projects take plenty of time i wouldn’t worry about the shooting setup until after you get your fencing, garden and chicken coupe going

You do not have enough land for a shooting range.

    Backstop or not.
