My backyard abuts a municipal open space. The municipality won’t let me create a gate through my backyard fence to access this area. I’m wondering if there is any way to create/buy/build some decent looking retractable stairs that would help give easy access without punching through? I’m thinking of something that’s more like stairs instead of a ladder that can semi-easily be deployed/retracted when not in use? If I ever got caught/in trouble for their use I’d have no problem getting rid of them… Thoughts?

Like a draw bridge only with stairs ?

being that half the stairs would be on their land – pret-sure they will not like that too. You need to check codes again as a gate can be seen as an egress in case of emergency as well. Personally – my fence, my gate, I dont think they can say shit. HOWEVER – your fence seems to but up against another one (theirs?) If so, ya, you cant put a gate in on their property/fence.

I mean I’d modify the fence so that the entire panel is the gate. Either swing or lift. Secured from the inside. So it’s a gate but not a gate.

    Where do you live?

So you have a public space behind your house but the city doesn’t allow gates to access this space. That just doesn’t make any sense to me why would they write by laws to prevent that.

  5. Looks more like a retention pond than anything with a perimeter fence (chain link). We do not have fair rights of use In our area due to ground water contamination – so ours are all fenced off as well.

Is the space open to the public?

It looks like a stormwater dry pond.

Are you even allowed to have access there? Like can you wander on that land by approaching from a different side, but it’s just inconvenient or is it off-limits? It looks fenced-off on all sides.

How does the City prevent you from installing a gate? Unless it is written into codes, they can’t really dictate where a gate is in your fence.

Get one of those small boom cranes they have on luxury yachts to lift the tenders off the deck and into the water to hoist you up and over the fence. Put a small basket or chair on a hook to lift you in comfort.

Info: Are you in the US? Whose fence is it?

I’d just make a gate that is hard to recognize/identify.

  12. All I see is a potential flood risk from that “open space.” Are they managing drainage for it?

  13. Hinges on the inside. It’s not a gate to go out, it’s for “backyard access.”
