COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – As winter makes its return to Colorado Springs, city police say they are on “crash alert status” Sunday morning.

Under crash alert, also known as cold reporting, if there are no serious injuries or fatalities, no suspected impairment, and no damage to public property, drivers can simply exchange information and report the crash within 72 hours. Police say if a tow truck is needed but otherwise all of the previous criteria is met, cold reporting is still permitted.

Springs police typically go on crash alert during inclement weather events, when there is an increased likelihood of crashes.

Crashes can be reported online here, or drivers can go to one of the police department’s substations and pick up a traffic accident report form.

In true Colorado fashion, don’t expect this status to remain in effect too long — Sunday’s wintry weather will be giving way to 70s by Tuesday.
