Throughout the world, winter has left grass looking discolored, uneven, and soft beneath the feet. Experts caution that during these early spring months, one particular nutrient could determine whether moss dominates or turf flourishes.

For a lawn that’s in better condition than ever before, gardening expert Geoff Hodge outlined his key advice on the Richard Jackson Garden website, with fertilization being a critical component.

He observed that whilst fertilizing does prompt lawns to “grow more quickly”, it also accomplishes “other vital things” that will ensure “your lawn makes everyone who sees it green with envy.”

George stated: “Regular mowing removes a lot of nutrients, and for a lawn that looks fabulous, lush and green, you need to replace these nutrients with a lawn feed.

“Good feeding also makes the grass thicker, stronger and healthier, so it is better equipped to fight off moss, weeds and even drought stress in summer and cold and wet stress in winter.”

The gardening authority highlighted that liquid lawn products are a superior choice as they provide instant benefits, carry significantly lower risk of burning the turf versus granular options, and aren’t as dependent on ideal weather circumstances.

George recommended that for exceptional results, follow the lead of greenkeepers and groundskeepers by selecting a “professional” product. What he’s alluding to is choosing a product that includes iron sulphate, which concurrently aids in controlling moss growth.

Iron sulphate continues to be a preferred solution for lawns. It’s broadly acknowledged for its effectiveness in managing or eliminating moss.

However, its advantages go beyond that; it also supports grass in photosynthesis, fostering a vibrant green color and enriching the soil with essential nutrients.

When applied in suitable amounts, it darkens the moss whilst providing the grass with extra iron for more lush growth.

It’s vital to underscore that you should only spread products where the iron is diluted in sand, fertilizer or water, never pure iron.
