Hello I’m a homeowner working on exposing the root flare on these two live oaks which are close to my house. The prior owners at some point had laid landscape plastic down over the root flare and then added soil and landscape rock on top.

I’ve removed quite a bit of roots, suckers and anything under roughly 3/8” in diameter. I’ve worked in stages, removing physically, with a homemade air knife, a leaf blower and a water hose.

My question is, is it okay to remove the larger roots that grew above the plastic. I’ve marked the ones I’m concerned about in red. Also the one marked in purple appears grown into the base of the tree so I’m assuming it would need to stay.

I plan to lay mulch when I’m done.

Thanks!
