I might have to move/remove this tree fern for some building works.

What’s the best approach?

Thanks

I’m in the same situation. We have been told to remove most of the fronds and then saw the fern off level about 20-30cm above ground level. Then just stick it back in the ground in its new space and make sure it’s well supported until it establishes. We have been warned that it will be heavy to move, so we are hoping to be able to roll ours to its new location.

Our builder is then just going to tear out the stump when he prepares the ground for the extended slab.

We are prepared for it to not survive this treatment.

Wear protective clothing for starters. The hairs are extremely irritating and nasty to inhale. And close all windows near by. We removed one and wet it down well but still had days of irritation. We chopped ours at the base with an all saw and dragged it far away from the house on a tarp.

Pieces big enough to carry, then you won’t hurt your back….

Also I want to keep it alive! Should’ve mentioned that 🙂

I recommend you dig it out. It’s likely 1/3 of the tree fern is under ground. Replant it, they’re magnificent and expensive to buy. Replant it under shade. All the best!

Douse it in petrol, throw a match ….. step back 😁

    chainsaw, shovel .
anything really, soft tree fern are bulley proof.
just keep moist after replanting for months
