Across Britain, winter has left lawns looking yellow, patchy, and feeling spongy underfoot. Specialists warn that during these early spring weeks, one specific mineral could be the deciding factor between moss taking over or grass thriving.

For a lawn that’s healthier than it’s ever been, gardening pro Geoff Hodge shared his essential recommendations on the Richard Jackson Garden website, with feeding being a crucial element.

He noted that whilst feeding does encourage lawns to “grow more quickly”, it also performs “other vital things” that will guarantee “your lawn makes everyone who sees it green with envy”.

George explained: “Regular mowing removes a lot of nutrients, and for a lawn that looks fabulous, lush and green, you need to replace these nutrients with a lawn feed.

“Good feeding also makes the grass thicker, stronger and healthier, so it is better equipped to fight off moss, weeds and even drought stress in summer and cold and wet stress in winter.”

The gardening specialist emphasised that liquid lawn treatments are an excellent option as they deliver immediate results, pose far less risk of scorching the grass compared to granular alternatives, and aren’t as reliant on perfect weather conditions.

George suggested that for outstanding outcomes, take inspiration from greenkeepers and groundspeople by opting for a “professional” treatment.

What he’s referring to is selecting a product that contains iron sulphate, which simultaneously helps control moss growth.

Iron sulphate remains a go-to solution for lawns. It’s widely recognised for its ability to tackle or eradicate moss effectively.

Yet, its benefits extend beyond that; it also assists grass in photosynthesis, promoting a lush green hue and infusing the soil with vital nutrients.

When used in appropriate quantities, it darkens the moss whilst supplying the grass with additional iron for more verdant growth.

It’s crucial to emphasise that you should only distribute products where the iron is diluted in sand, fertiliser or water, never pure iron.
