Peaches can be a very rewarding crop to grow. They are able to produce hundreds of pounds of fruit per tree, and pruning them guarantees a larger and healthier tree.

  1. I have a miniature nectarine that I've been growing in a large pot. Every winter I put it in the unheated garage near a window for light. Since it is rated for zone 7 and we are a zone 6 I am unsure when to prune – the tree usually doesn't go outside until April because I'm afraid I will lose the buds. Any suggestions on whether I should do somethings differently? It is loaded with big fat buds right now in the garage.

  2. Last summer I was gifted baby peach trees that were seeds that grew from a beautiful mother tree.

I planted 2, (gave away a bunch), they tripled in height from 12-15" in their first year to about 3 ft and are really healthy looking.
But, we have an iowa blizzard arriving tomorrow, so I'll have to wait a few more days before i prune them.

Thank you for this very timely video!

  3. I thought stone fruit should only be pruned in summer, to avoid silver leaf disease. Is that not a problem in your country?

  4. I’m a bit jealous. My peach tree is still mostly covered by snow. We have about 4 feet of snow, and maybe 4 more feet coming Sunday and Monday. I can’t wait for the “I can see bare ground” season! 😊. Definitely looking forward to pruning fruit trees!

  5. What are those little rings around the base of the trees? im sure there is a name and purpose for them but I cant come up with a name.

  6. I wish I would have seen this video 20 yeas ago. I had an Elberta that got way too big then got mummy disease, I ended up cutting it off.
Probably the hardest thing about pruning is everyone is afraid of taking off too much.

  7. What variety of peach grows well in MI? Any freestone varieties? I need something cold hardy for northern IL!

  8. Grew up on a peach/sour cherry/ apple farm near Hartford Michigan- dad loved farming- i miss trimming those trees in winter with him! Used to walk down the sandy trail to the back 40 to pick a peach right off the tree at different times of the day- once you pick a peach off the tree in ripe season- you'll never find better!
Got a real good garden, but would farm again in a heartbeat!

    Thanks for the info!

  9. Sweet cherry tree pruning! I've heard that sweet cherries should be prune central leader and tart cherries should be pruned open like a nectarine. Is this true? Or would a sweet cherry tree benefit more open goblet style?

  10. Thanks so much. Im in Ga and my peach tree is loaded with blooms so I cant prune mine until next year. Ive got 2 more smaller peach trees but they are gonna have any fruit this year. Theyre still babies. I will have this knowledge now for whenever I need it. I always learn so much from you
