Great advice
Thanks for the great ideas
For the past few years, I've been buying special potting mix, hoping the plants would grow healthily. Instead, I was disappointed. The soil was poor quality, full of sticks, etc., and the plants grew very poorly in it. So this year, I made my own mix of sifted compost, perlite, etc. Honestly, I've never had such beautiful vegetable and flower seedlings (I show them in one of my shorts). Today, I know I won't buy that kind of soil again, but I'll make my own potting mix. I'll spend the saved money on seeds, tools, and other useful things in the garden.
HECK YEAH!!! So good to see you James!!! ❤❤❤
You don’t need the marble in the cup if you use two cups that are different sizes. Also, use a clear cup on the outside….you will be able to see your water level when water. For example, a 16 ounce cup in a 15 oz clear cup will leave a gap in the bottom and you cab see the water level.
Thanks
We love you Jersey James!❤🎉
Love your videos James❤❤❤ Also love Tuck!!!
James for future t shirts. Can u put the little king looking down with the sun on us as a design ? Over a garden.. 🙏👍✌️🇺🇸❤
why is he holding a miracle grow bag, even if its "organic" we all know its SHIT!!!! get it together man!
I just followed your recipe for the homemade potting soil. I can sow seeds in there? or is that too much compost to sow seeds in?
I usually grab the green bags of miracle grow when HD has Spring Black Friday and they're $2 each. Screen them, get the wood products out and even small stones (got to be unscreened top soil in the mix) then you can use it in pots. I add a brick of coconut coir and plenty of perlite. Works great for seed starting up to the potting stage til you are ready to put it in the ground.
Excellent video! Thanks!

Where do you purchase one like that and what is its name?
Yes but the "seed starting" mix is supposedly sterile, and will also supposedly not contain fungus gnat larva.
THANK YOUI! for using a razor to cut drainage holes that way, I hate seeing people say to heat up something and melt holes release fumes, or drill tiny plastic bits. That is the most efficient way to do it and sadly I rarely see it in youtube videos
I wonder if that clay keeps squash vine borers away…
Hi James, thanks for all of the information. I have two questions. The first is about the soil content, you suggested using Coco Coir, compost, vermiculite, and perlite for soil, but this video suggests something else entirely for seed starting – why the difference? It's funny, because my Old Farmer's Almanac calendar even mentioned the Coco Coir mixture for seeds. The second question is about my Yukon Gold seed potatoes that I just received from the grower today. The instructions say to put the potatoes in a single layer, keep them dry at room temperature, and put in full light or sunlight for 7-14 days to green sprout. I put them in a tray about 6 inches under my grow lights, do you think this is a good idea or will that be too much light? Thanks so much!
My great grand dad planted his winter crops around St. Patrick's day, and his summer crops around May 19th.
Today Ace had a deal on the yellow bag… 4 for $10
❤❤❤
I'm learning so much! So hopeful for this season!
I guess a lot depends on what the extra time and labor is worth to each individual grower. Convenience of ready made seed starter might be a good option for many who have other priorities, the sterile starter is helpful to cut down the fungal knat problem that straight potting doesn’t address.
Thank you for the video.❤🇵🇹
I've been using the coco coir blocks and very fine perlite for my seed starting mix the past couple of seasons. I recently almost bought burpeee "organic" seed starting mix because it was all the store had until i read what they add to it 🤢🤢🤢
I save the bark I sift out. Then after my plants get the first true leaves. I mulch the plants with it, so the soil doesn't dry out as fast.
PRETTY LIGHTS!!! Love it brother 👍🏻
Timely advise and very comprehensive, thanks James!
Peat moss is bad for the environment and unsustainable
lol all the seed starting mix I use had tons of bark & sticks
great tip for the starting mix, love it! making me pumped for the season – let's go!!
$22 for potting soil? Wow
Happy Frog is awesome but $25 for 2 CF here Ocean is even better same price for 1.5 CF,
Thanks for the tips
miracle gro is really a miracle, grows aphids like its a miracle
I use the Expert Gardener which is Walmarts brand . I pick a few wood pieces out on the top layer so it doesn’t cover up my seeds . My seeds do great . As soon as some true leaves start emerging I liquid fertilize them with a weak solution every time I water . It costs 10 dollars for 2 cubic feet .
There is a difference if it's a good seed starting mix. Some, like the Jiffy seed starter mix, have no fertilizer at all which I understand has some benefits when your seedlings are just starting out. It is also sterile meaning much less chance of damping off and no fungus gnats if you're starting your seedlings indoors. And of course, it is already finely sifted with a pretty good texture for small seeds. Maybe it's not always worth it, but if I get better germination with some of the pricier seeds, it's not a bad deal.
Moon phase matters.
I love how you explain things and you always teach me something new. Thank~You! 🤗 🌱🌱🌱
What about your basic mix? I made that and added some mushroom compost to it. My tomato and pepper seedlings are coming along quite nicely, and they will have nutrient for growing their true leaves.
Finally see you upload!
Zone 10a here. It has been 80 degrees here in NorCal. Already have peppers, tomatos, cucumber and watermelon started.
