I’m not experienced enough to figure out how to divide these into tubers. After reading endless amounts of info online, I’m unsure of what size pots to start these clumps out indoors?! Most of what I found was about tubers, but I don’t know if planting the clumps together requires different sizing, soil proportions etc. Any help is greatly appreciated! Also, I saw someone on YouTube put clumps like this in shallow soil, kept watering it to proper moisture and when it sprouted she divides after, is that possible?

This is an automatic reminder regarding r/dahlias Rule 3:
When reasonable*, posters should make a good-faith effort to identify which variety/varieties are shown in their photo(s). If you don’t know for certain, please say so. Someone will usually know!
*Common-sense exceptions to this rule will be honored, such as if the photo does not contain a blossom, or if your photo contains large volumes (such as in wide field shots).
If you’ve already done this, thank you! No further action required.
If not, please add a reply to this comment and confirm if you know the name of your dahlia variety/varieties shown in the photo(s). Alternately, if you’re uncertain of the variety name(s), it’s ok to say that, too.

Also, I’m in Zone 7B, estimated last frost date is April 14th from what I can find
Unless I’m wrong, if you are just starting them til they sprout basically, just a pot that they fit in in diameter, and maybe where you can get a couple inches of dirt under and a couple over the top for depth
At a glance, these all appear to be broken necks, which means the tubers that dangle from them from threadbare necks will not produce flowers. You can snip them off.
You can post up pics and we can help walk you through cleaning them up, if you’d like. 🙂
