Good morning BraIns Trust. I've recently bought a home in central Victoria and have built up one of the existing garden beds. I used some mulch I inherited from the previous owner, and a collection of these plants has popped up.
Anyone have any idea what they might be? I'm thinking probably some sort of melon? Or pumpkin/squash maybe. But I don't really know. Any ideas?
And if we can ID these – are they likely to survive the winter?
We're in central Victoria, near Bendigo.

looks pumpkin-ny
Looks like some kind of cucurbit
Pumpkin? Maybe?
Maybe Peas…?
It looks like a pea plant, was it pea mulch you used? Cause the same thing happened to me.
My best guess is a pumpkin variety, and I doubt you’d have much luck with it surviving your cold winter sadly.
Used to live in Central Highlands and tried to extend my pumpkin growing season with very little luck.
It could be any of pumpkin, cucumber, zucchini. It’s too late for them now – they need to start growing in spring (if pumpkin) or summer (for the others) so they have enough growing time before it gets cold.
If you want to try to keep them growing you could always replant them in a big pot and take it inside or get a little greenhouse.
Cucumber, squash… someone left a veggie or some seeds in the garden.
It could be a vegetable plant that grows from seeds. However, it’s too early to say which one it is. It could be (pumpkin, bottle guard, cucumber, zucchini, or something else entirely. You’ll have to wait a little longer to know what it is exactly until the leaf grows a bit bigger and takes on its original plant shape.
Rockmelon? Watermelon?

Pumpkin….. always pops up!
