There’s nothing like seeing robins in your garden on a beautiful spring morning and, if you want to attract them, placing a simple item outside could help. Little you may know, a certain fruit can draw them in and encourage them to visit time and time again, and they particularly like it during months like March.

It’s good news for many as, now the weather is starting to get warmer, people are beginning to spend more time in the garden and enjoy their outdoor spaces. However, you could now encourage birds to visit by attracting them with a simple food that they love, making it an even more inviting space to relax in.

This isn’t the first advice of its kind to be shared recently either. Back in November, it was also revealed another fruit could work to attract robins too.

The tip was recently shared by Martin Cormican, who’s known as Martin’s Birdwatch on Instagram. He uses his platform to share all sorts of birdwatching knowledge.

According to Martin, there are a few things peoople need to know. He said attracting birds to your garden and bird feeders involves a mixture of providing the right food, creating a welcoming habitat and ensuring safety from predators.

In a recent post, he wrote: “Offer a variety of food/seed mixes. Use a mix of seeds, including sunflower seeds, nyjer seeds, millet and cracked corn to attract different bird species.

“Suet and fat balls, especially in winter. Suet provides high-energy food for birds like woodpeckers and nuthatches.

“Fruits. Place slices of apples, oranges or berries for birds like robins and orioles. Offer live or dried mealworms to attract insect-eating birds such as bluebirds and wrens.

“Ensure clean, fresh water is available for drinking and bathing. Use shallow baths with a gentle slope.”

So, according to Martin, all you need to place outside to attract robins in March is some apple. While there are other fruits you could leave out too, this seems to be a popular choice.

Why it works

You may not realise, but robins really like to munch on apple. To attract them, you can offer them some small, fresh apple slices or add them to a bird platform feeder.

Robins naturally eat berries and fruits from trees and shrubs, which is why they are often drawn to fruit. In fact, they particularly enjoy it during the spring months.

You need to make sure the fruit is in good condition and doesn’t turn mouldy. If it does, remove it and replace it with fresh. Some experts say you should also avoid giving them high-sugar fruits like grapes.

However, if you’re low on apple, there are other options you can use. Dried fruits such as raisins could be left out for them too.

They also like pears and oranges, as long as they’re chopped finely. There are a few different foods you can leave out to attract them to your garden.
