Planted some cheap dahlia tubers that summer that nearly all flowers. Into autumn/winter we had a lot happen in life so I got lazy, left them all in their pots and put them in our (not entirely airtight) shed. Soil looked damp and I can see mould on some.

This one (Paint It Black) seems to have double or tripled in the amount of tubers and its mostly stuck together. I cut the dried out woody bits on top but what do you all think of the tubers? No little eyes/red bits to see but it is fairly early. Also quite a few loose/broken off ones. Last photo of the smaller bundle are White Anemonies

West/south West England so still get a bit of cold overnight so not planting new tubers yet but trying to figure out what is salvageable or not.

This is an automatic reminder regarding r/dahlias Rule 3:

When reasonable*, posters should make a good-faith effort to identify which variety/varieties are shown in their photo(s). If you don’t know for certain, please say so. Someone will usually know!

*Common-sense exceptions to this rule will be honored, such as if the photo does not contain a blossom, or if your photo contains large volumes (such as in wide field shots).

If you’ve already done this, thank you! No further action required.

If not, please add a reply to this comment and confirm if you know the name of your dahlia variety/varieties shown in the photo(s). Alternately, if you’re uncertain of the variety name(s), it’s ok to say that, too.

  2. The broken ones may have come from the original clump. If the neck is broken when it’s harvested it loses the ability to flower, but can still continue to survive as a tuber underground. You can probably chuck those if you’re not seeing any crown attached to those, it’s not like you didn’t grow plenty of replacements. 😁

These look good. As the other answers say. Check out you tube Iowa for splittingbut as long as they have some part of the main stock still attached and they are not squishy you have nothing to lose to put the in a few pots! Good luck!

The ones with no crown attached aren’t viable, the rest of them look great
