Over the years on this channel I’ve shared a lot of gardening advice. But the longer you garden, the more your thinking evolves.

In this video I’m revisiting 8 pieces of gardening advice I gave in the past that I wouldn’t recommend the same way today. Some of these tips sounded good at the time, but experience in the garden has a way of teaching you what really works.

We’ll cover common gardening myths and advice about things like Epsom salt, soil pH testing, clay soil, pepper pruning, tomato planting, compost use, and crop rotation for home gardeners.

Gardening is always a learning process, and sometimes the best lessons come from looking back at what we used to believe and refining it with real experience.

  1. Which one surprised you the most?
And be honest… have you ever followed one of these pieces of advice before?
    I definitely did 😅

  2. I did sand once too, luckily only one small bed.
😂 live and learn. Great video. The things we've all done and now don't. Glad I journal my garden every year.
    Happy gardening y'all.

  3. I love learning about the tiny hairs on tomato stems are called 'tricoms'. Another new word to add to my garden vocabulary. Oh yes, the'planting tomatoes deeper' suggestion. I will still do that if the baby plants get too tall. But good to know it's not necessary. Great hint about testing compost. This video is fun to watch. Love the clarifications!

  4. Wow Brian time with you sure has flown.
I used to add sand and now I use coco coir, and perlite. I use just coco coir to start seed's and they do very well.
I have learned so much from you over the many years and appreciate you. Thank you Brian!

  5. I’ve been watching your videos long enough to know that some of the lessons you have taught were not helpful to my garden. But what you have taught me over the years far outweighs the advice that didn’t work. The best advice you have given me is you’ve shown me how to make the most of the space I have, making use of the different gardening seasons and taking advantage of space I never thought of using for gardening and turning it into a very productive gardening area. And the most important thing of all! You can be on the complete opposite side of the country and make a friendship that you cherish! Keep on being you Brian!! Oh and yes it is crazy how fast your son is becoming a man!

  6. Great video but I just want to know what Noah’s plans are! Although not an absolute necessity, I’m guessing he’s going to university. I’m inviting you (actually HIM) to check out Harding University; it’s in SEARCY Arkansas, where we live, and near where your grandparents lived. I’m sure he’s on overload with information about higher education but he’s such a sweet kids and I know he’d love it here (plus we could be his secondary family!). Lest he think I’m a weirdo, I’ve just been watching your channel several years and remember him as a kid; so sweet. 😊

  7. Is I like the shaved face!
Have I watched you for that long? 😮time flies!
Have a blessed day with your family! ❤

  8. Brian, love your videos. I did the soil test you did with your son. I also do the plant tomatoes deep. Guess I've watched your videos for a while. Keep teaching.
BTW, can you repost the link to your plant timing video?

  9. WOW ! A person admits they were wrong and found a better way . You get an A+ Gold Star atta boy. We all need to do that.

  10. Like others, I’ve been watching for several years and I’ve learned so much. Beyond gardening, I’d like you to know how much I appreciate the courage you exhibit by showing your vulnerability to a global audience. Whether it’s a health issue or an admission of a mistake, I wish we could all show your level of courage. ❤

  11. Thank You Brian, from Vancouver Island Fanny Bay! I really appreciate that you take the time to share your mistakes and help us to continue gardening ! I tell my friends and new gardener about you ! I refer to gardening as : Its just like starting to play golf ….you are never good at first… it’s a life time leaning process!!!! Keep on being you Bryan!

  12. I still like to plant my tomato’s deep to help them be more secure especially since I’m using 20 gallon containers. I put the root ball all the way at the bottom and fill it with soil. The plants end up very well ANCHORED.

  13. The compost is the main one for me. Had never done that before. Amended with it after hearing you talk about compost. Wow, what a difference. We are mostly lucky in getting good & free compost from our county. I have learned to dig out stuff that doesn't belong. Keep up the good education !

  14. THIS is one of the very reasons I follow you! As knowledge increases so does wisdom….and things do change! Thank you for your honesty and for showing us all how to GROW!! 💜

  15. I have great success with lavender chalky lime soil also ime on a hill
Like you i heard the same about the little hairs on tomato stems
Thanks for your video's ect ❤
