The previous owners left this raised bed as seen, was going to clear out and plant strawberries. I took a photo to identify the plant and it came up strawberries. Can I use/salvage these? Any tips if so? Bed is approx 4’x4’, location is South Wales UK.

It looks like forest strawberries, not the large type. They live their own life. But they are too crowded.

Find a new spot for them, half on same area, and buy a real strawberry. Use the raised bed for salad. Strawberries need a 3 year renewal schedule.

The wood is too tall. Ideally you would have the soil at the edge or just barely under. Id say just fertilize or work compost between the plants without burying the “crown” and see how they do. At most I would replace that border with one that’s only an inch/3cm taller than the soil height. They clearly don’t need that to change drastically but if you do anything that’s the most.

If they produce food you like, keep them and maybe thin out the ones that don’t produce well. If you don’t like them start over.

This looks like my ever bearing strawberries do in containers. Definitely crowded.
