Just got gifted a massive 1 metre staghorn fern, it’s struggled with a lack of water, do I just mount it to a board and hope? Some sphagnum moss in the back?

That looks like a bunch of plants. What does the root mass look like? Seems as if it would be worth trying to separate them, even if you can only get a couple of them from the edges. Much more manageable as individual plants, and worst.case scenario what’s left will be lighter and easier to mount

    Also that’s awesome and I’m jealous 😀

That’s an Elkhorn (*Platycerium bifurcatum*), not Staghorn (*P. superbum*).

You can mount it straight to a board if you can get it snug, or fill any smaller gaps with sphagnum or coir peat – you don’t want a large gap at the back though.

Alternatively, you can cut it into multiple smaller plants that are more manageable.

Either way, you then want to put it somewhere somewhat shady & moist.

Elkhorn fern. Separate and try mount around tree.

First off its fuckin massive, secondly it’s an elkhorn, thirdly I vote against breaking it up that take forever to get that large. Ratchet strap it to a tree and in 10years remember you’ve gotta remember to cut that ratchet off…

Don’t strap it to a tree like a gum as it shedding bark will cause it to not adhere to it as well.

I have one similar size and I completely fucked my back up trying to move it after it fell off its board. It’s been propped up against a tree for the last few years.

Be careful when you’re moving that thing
