Am looking to dump a whole lot of mulch/wood chip down on this garden area.

Will be spraying for weeds again before doing it, but would it be beneficial to place cardboard or weed matting down after spraying and prior to the mulch going down?

Don’t use weed mats. You’re gonna regret it big time.

Don’t use either. Weedmatt won’t do anything for you in this case. Cardboard is best to kill existing grass or large areas of weeds in establishing new garden beds. It isn’t the best around existing trees because it can become an impenetrable soggy layer that promotes fungal growth.

50-100mm depth of pine flake mulch will do. Keep +50mm away from the trunks of your palms and ferns. Otherwise it should be placed not to touch the other plant stems/trunks.

Cardboard. NEVER weed mat. It disintegrates into tangled threads of black plastic and doesn’t even suppress weeds that well.

Never ever weed mat. Basically a grow zone for awful weeds. Cardboard is great. Blocks weeds and decomposes into the soil. Works a treat (with thick mulch).

This sub needs a pinned thread for weed suppression tips. Tip #1 should say don’t put plastic in your garden.

Neither. Throw a heap of mulch down👍

Perforated cardboard boxes from ( dan murphys/bunnings ) then 10-15mm of sugarcane mulch & topped with 20mm of the mulch/decorative bark you want.

Water soil before applying cardboard & water each layer before adding the next.

When i do my beds i fill my barrow with water & drop the cardboard in as i break down the boxes, poke them with a garden fork once they’re laid on the ground, top the barrow up before putting the sugarcane mulch in ( reduces the macro dust released during the process ) & letting it soak for 5mins before distributing.

It can be time/labour consuming but definitley worth the effort.

WEED MATS ARE TOXIC…Mulch mulch and more mulch

Cardboard, mulch on top. Been transforming 2 acres one box at a time here… with a back that is on the surgery list.

Never ever ever weed matting. Why put a bunch of plastic – that’s only going to breakdown into shitty annoying threads of plastic – anywhere near your soil?? 🤮
