French marigolds are another long-lasting summer flower to plant now before it’s too late. Julian suggests planting them inside first, then moving them out after the last frost. ‘Thin the seedlings so each one has room to grow strong,’ he says.

They’re also brilliant for beginners. ‘Being low maintenance, they thrive in a variety of conditions and are ideal for borders, pots and vegetable gardens,’ says a gardening expert from B&Q.

‘Available as bedding plants or seeds, marigolds are a favourite for vibrant summer displays, delivering long‑lasting colour throughout the season and helping to brighten borders and containers.’
