Top split this fall in a wind storm and then the trunk was damaged this winter. It is about 4 yrs old. Think it will make it? Any advice?

Cut off the entire limb that split using a proper collar cut. When next winter roles around paper wrap the trunk. Give it the best shot it’s got, I’ve seen trees survive worse. Best of luck

I think its time to pull the plug

That’s a science experiment now. You could get a good grafter to clean the split & try binding it with ties to join the tops. And you could ask them to clean/paint the trunk wound. And after a few years you’ll know a bit more about that specific Maple’s ability to recover or not.

Even if it were to live you’re gonna be nothing but disappointed – it will be slower to grow and will not thrive and you will have wasted years of your life when you eventually get rid of it anyway. Start over now with a fresh specimen and your setback will be minor.
