Today we’re doing some plant shopping and I’m sharing all the things I look for at big box garden centers so I don’t waste money and only bring home healthy plants. We’re talking growing zones, annual vs perennial, checking roots and pests, when to buy the bigger plant vs the smaller one, and a few of my favorite garden staples like petunias, scabiosa, and creeping jenny. If you’ve ever walked through Lowe’s or Home Depot wondering what’s actually worth buying, these are the tips I always keep in the back of my mind. 🌿

  1. For clearance rack I would also recommend to check for any pest before. Don't want to bring any pest home. I found using biotone helped me alot when I plant my plants, it increased it's survival rate in my zone when the weather is wonky in the spring. Especially when we are in the 50s then the next day it jumps to the 70s. Yes the plant tone is a good way to go to fertilize plants without having to buy every kind of fertilizer. Thanks Robbie for adding to check for pest after the fertilizer section of the video.

  2. Great informative video…loved it….you could have a “side huddle” working at Lowe’s. I may stop into my Lowe’s today😊

  3. ❤❤❤❤LOVED YOUR VIDEO TODAY. Been gardening for years and I always learn something new from you especially in this one. Never knew the cactus plant had a plastic topper, who knew!!!

  4. Another very professional and informative video Robbie! Great job💜 wishing you continued success!

  5. So much useful information and given in a way I can understand 😊 The cutting back thing I don't understand so much. Maybe in the future you could explain a little (lot) more. These types of videos are Priceless!!! Thanks a bunch🌻

  6. This is great info Robbie! Thank you so much for this video. Now I just need you to come to my house Anna help me plan my garden haha

  7. I have a LOVE HATE relationship with your Home Depot and Lowes shopping videos. I want all of it!! 😂 I love all the tips you give for checking the plants so carefully and the "fake outs" of plastic stuff. What i hate is that now I want to buy everything you showed even though i dont know where to put it. AND I really should save money for food and mortgage… but they are so pretty!!! 🙂 i could just walk over there on my lunch break… hmmm…Thanks for all the great info.

  8. I like how you have done this informative video. I’m 64, now. I’ve been doing all of what you suggest, except for the lifting of the plant out of its container, right at the store. See? You taught me something new! 😅😊

  9. Thank you such a informative video. I learned so much from you today. I look forward to starting my mornings watching your videos. Love you and Brett a wonderful couple ❤

  10. Great video, Robbie. Lots of good info presented in a clear concise manner. You're my favorite gardener ❤

  11. Hi Robbie! These are very good secrets for plant shopping. I agree with you on all of them. I always check out the clearance plants, too. I always try to inspect the plants before buying them, but don't always pull them out of their pots to check the roots. I will definitely do that this year. One other thing that I've learned is if you're buying a perennial to plant in a container, make sure it is hardy 2 zones down from your zone, as plants in containers are not as hardy as plants in the ground. This has really helped me because all of the plants in the back are in containers, or raised beds. I learned quite a few years ago that HD can't lower the prices on their plants if they're looking bad because they don't own them. Lowe's owns their plants and can mark them down. Thank you so much for putting this together for us and sharing!

  12. Robbie… GREAT information today on plant basics. Not everyone is an experienced gardener and they need information like this! Love your channel!

  13. Lots of good tips here! I always hear people saying that creeping Jenny is invasive. But I have purposely planted lots of it in my garden. I use it instead of mulch. It spreads over the ground and I can easily plant a bush or perennial in the middle of it. It dies back a little bit during the winter, but then comes back green in the spring, and yes, it will grow over the edge of the bed. I clip those off once or twice a season and propagate more of it for other areas in the garden. It doesn’t rain enough in Oklahoma to make it come up in places you don’t want it. You have to keep it watered. It has never shown up in a place I didn’t want it. The edges will grow, but I just trim it off. I love Scabiosa too! Last year I bought my first one and I accidentally broke off a piece so I just stuck it in the ground and it started growing. I bought another one recently and plan on spreading it out through my garden. Lately, my Lowes – the discount plants have been terrible all last year. There were no good deals but in the past, I’ve gotten many nice things. I think management must’ve changed there because I was told that other Lowe’s did have good deals in different parts of the city.

Also about creeping Jenny. Several times I have created new beds that I did not have enough plants to fill it so I planted creeping Jeni just to cover the ground to keep weeds sprouting up. It works perfect and then I just make a hole in it to add other plants as I purchase them. I think it’s a fantastic plant.

  14. Robbie this was such terrific useable info for new or older gardeners. What a practical topic and you made it one of the best about purchasing from big box stores. I never looked closely at those little succulents with fake flowers on top 🤓blew my mind 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I agree lowes sale plant racks go there first. Your gardens you and your hubs have created a paradise.

  15. Thank you for this valuable information. Do you always have to separate perennials, for instance hosta's?

  16. I don't buy cactus, but what a scam that they glue fake blooms onto them!! Lucky you that your Lowe's already has Supertunia Vista Bubblegum!!

  17. Naw where I live full sun kills strawberries . Louisiana zone 9b they better with some afternoon shade.

Some that say annual here are actually perennial vise versa at our Lowe's.. 😂
Ive brought plants that said perennial get home plant it all of a sudden heat of summer come and the plant died . I go google and come to find out it was actually an annual for my area..
Same with some annuals turned out to be perennial for me..

  18. Robbie what a great video! You touched on so many important issues when shopping for plants. One of my most favorite shops is the clearance section at Lowe’s. I have purchased so many beautiful plants that I have had for years and spent just a couple dollars for them. Hope you and Brent have a fabulous weekend !🌻🌱🪻

  19. What do u use to keep the bugs off ur Petunias? I feel like I have tried everything and they get eaten down to nothing. Also, mine are perennial. Im in south GA zone 8b/9a.
