The long months of winter are almost over, with the spring equinox just a fortnight away. Warmer weather is hopefully on the horizon, meaning it won’t be long before we can start spending time out in the garden again.

The brutal weather can wreak havoc on our outdoor spaces, especially the patio. The stones can become discoloured or rusty from garden furniture stains, which makes your whole garden look messy and uncared for. Thankfully though, there’s an easy fix, and you won’t even need a pressure washer.

YouTuber Fix it with Fowler has shared an easy way to get your garden patio looking ‘spotless’ again, with no harsh chemicals or power tools involved. Instead, all you need is two common kitchen items, and white vinegar isn’t one of them.

He said: “I’m going to show you how to clean it without using any harmful chemicals, especially for the environment and even for your pets. The best thing is you don’t even need a jet wash.”

His ‘eco friendly’ alternative involves using two things you probably have in the cupboard under the sink – soda crystals and washing up liquid.

How to clean your garden patio

Before you start pouring anything onto the stones, the first thing you need to do is remove any lingering weeds. The expert used a trowel to do this, then grabbed a stiff brush to sweep the patio and get rid of any dust or debris left behind.

Next, wet the patio with the garden hose, before taking a bag of soda crystals and giving the patio a light sprinkle. The pro urged people not to miss any spots, but you don’t need to use the full bag.

He continued: “Now you need to apply a little bit of washing up liquid or dish soap onto the area.” Again, you don’t have to overdo it – a light squeeze will suffice.

The next step is to scrub the mixture into the patio stones using a stiff brush. Start from one area and work your way around, then leave it to ‘work its magic’ for 48 hours.

Give it another quick rinse with the garden hose, and you should notice that the stains have lifted away. The pro continued: “This is eco-friendly, good for the environment and specifically good for your pets.”
