Georgie Gardner has announced she’s leaving Channel 9 after nearly a quarter of a century at the network.

The presenting veteran first joined Channel 9 in 2002 and has been a 6pm newsreader as well as Today Show host in that time.

She said it’s been a difficult decision to make to leave her professional home of close to 25 years, but she said the time is right.

“I could not be more grateful for the range of opportunities Nine has afforded me,” she said in a statement.

Her final bulletin will be on Friday April 17 and Channel 9 hasn’t yet announced who will be replacing her on the 6pm bulletin.

Georgie hasn’t revealed what will be her next chapter, but she said she’s excited to find out.

“I’m open to new opportunities,” she said.

“So much still to learn and discover in the world, and at age 55, so much still to contribute.”

She got her start in journalism at radio station 2NX Newcastle back in 1992 when she was just 21.

Georgie called out the “countless colleagues” who “enriched” her career at Channel 9 and also everyone she’s interviewed in that time.

“They are the reason why the decision to resign has not been made lightly,” she said.

“So to them and our viewers, I am immensely grateful. It’s been awesome, and it’s time.”

Nine’s executive director for news and current affairs, Fiona Dear praised Georgie’s “versatility” as a presenter and the way she has delivered the news to Aussies for years.

“It’s a remarkable achievement and during that time Georgie has been loved and respected by audiences across Australia,” Fiona said.

“She has had a front row seat to some of the most important moments in history, delivering the biggest news stories to audiences first thing in the morning, in prime time at 6pm and late into the evening with Nightline.

“Georgie’s professionalism and composure during breaking news events makes her one of the most talented newsreaders in the country.

“Georgie’s decision to step away from television news has our full support and we thank her and wish her well in her future endeavours.”
