Learning how to grow plants for mutual benefit is one of the greatest pleasures in the garden. As an organic gardener, I like to use companion planting in the fruit and veg patch to control pests, prevent disease and bring pollinators in to increase the harvest. Here I show you my favourite varieties and how I plant them alongside my vegetable plants for maximum effect. Plus they have the added advantage of making my veg garden look prettier!
ALAN IS USING:
Compost by Melcourt – https://rb.gy/l3sizj
Tools by Spear and Jackson – https://rb.gy/6wl4lh
Vegetable Plants and Annual Plants from Blue Diamond Garden Centres –
https://rb.gy/tmo4r3
Seeds for Sweet Peas and Cosmos by Fothergills – https://rb.gy/pansp7
Potting Bench by Forest Garden – https://rb.gy/9b0ara
Here are some of my favourite companion plants:
Dianthus and Cosmos – great for attracting pollinators whilst adding pops of colour and scent to my raised beds.
The Cosmos, you may remember, I grew from seed in a previous video.
Scabious – another great plant for bees and butterflies that adds a pop of pink to my veg patch ! Plus they make great cut flowers.
Nasturtiums – add splashes of orange to the garden, are edible and are believed to deter black fly – let me know if they work for you!
Chives – not only do they taste good, you get stunning flowers and their roots are known to deter pests.
I also show you two of my favourite planting combinations:
1: French Marigolds and Tomatoes – as well as adding colour, the roots of the French Marigolds deter white fly from attacking the tomato plants.
2. Climbing Sweet Peas and French Beans – These can be planted up any structure . I use a metal wigwam but you could use hazel poles tied at the top. As they grow the flowers from the sweet peas bring pollinators to the french beans. This variety of french bean, ‘Cosse Violette’ flower as well so it’s a win win!

alais it did not work for me. Tried it years ago. I never tried again as I did not like the smell of them.
They may deter whitefly- if they don't get eaten by the slugs first 🙈
But dont the slugs eat all the marigolds?
❤Yep, that’s the companions, I put together. 🎉Great tips, Alan ✅
Thank you Alan 😊
I have a honeysuckle which gets attacked by whitefly every year. It’s in a shady location, so I guess I can’t do the French marigold trick? Any other suggestions?
