Residents looking to grow their own produce this summer will soon be able to sign up for garden space as the Blackfalds community garden registration opens Friday, March 13.

The Town of Blackfalds will open plot registration at 7:00 a.m., offering gardeners the chance to reserve space at one of three community garden locations.

Gardeners can choose from sites at Aspen Drive, Pine Crescent Park and a new location at Willow Park, recently added to expand the program.

Community initiative encourages residents to grow food and donate to local food bank

The initiative is designed to give residents an opportunity to grow fresh food, connect with neighbours and spend time outdoors during the growing season.

Plots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of two plots permitted per registrant.

Registration will be available online for those with a PerfectMind account, as well as in person at guest services at the Abbey Centre.

Garden plots will open for the season starting May 15, weather permitting, and will remain available until the Tuesday following Thanksgiving weekend.

The Aspen garden site will include 10 plots and the town notes the number of Aspen plots has been reduced this year as crews prepare for a redesigned layout planned for 2027.

The new Willow Park garden will feature 20 plots and at Pine Crescent Park, gardeners can choose from 25 plots or 10 smaller plots.

Participants can also take part in the “Growing a Row” initiative, which encourages gardeners to dedicate one row of their plot to produce that will be donated to the Beyond Food Community Hub and the Blackfalds Food Bank in the fall.

The program aims to support the community while promoting healthy food access for residents in need.

More information on locations, regulations and pricing is available on the town’s website.
