If you’re over 50 with a small backyard garden, this video will save you years of trial and error. After more than 30 years in my tiny backyard, I’m sharing 3 small garden design ideas I wish I had done from the very beginning – to make my garden easier, calmer and less work as I got older.

These are simple garden design changes that any gardener over 50 or 60 can make in a small space – no major landscaping required.

In this video, you’ll learn:
– Why deep, overflowing garden beds stopped working for me as I got older (and what I did)
– The container “rule” I stopped following and my simple approach instead
– How one great plant and a trellis became the focal point in my small garden
– What a display table can do for your backyard design and how to style one
– How to enjoy seasonal color with annuals without planting an entire bed

Whether you have a small backyard, patio, courtyard or balcony, these small garden ideas will help you create a low-maintenance garden that’s beautiful and realistic for the next 30 years.

  13. I LOVE BIG POTS and I can not lie! I am 71 and live in zone 9A Henderson, NV. I put them on coasters that way I’m able to move them to a shady area. I’m still getting used to the climate and types of plants that do well here.

  16. I created a garden table for my mum several years ago. She had got to the stage where walking was a struggle, but still liked to go out to refill her bird table once or twice a day and wanted to continue to feel involved in the garden. So I set up the table by the side of the path to the bird table so that she could stop for a while on her walk, dead head a few flowers and enjoy the blooms. She loved that table!
