Hi all, I just bought this house 2 months ago and the city is redoing the sidewalk. A city representative came to my house today and asked if they could remove these trees and plant 2 new ones wherever I wanted free of cost. They said I could pick and gave me some native local ideas such as sugar maple, black walnut, and other native to upstate NY. I don’t know anything about trees and figured I’d ask the specialist what you would recommend and where I should put these trees? Should I just move them like 10 feet away from the sidewalk? They will be saplings around 2-4 inches thick I believe.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Cut all the other one and plant native tree to your region

  2. I just learned that black walnut is poisonous to dogs.

I would go native to your region. Maybe something that’s known to attract birds? If has either beautiful spring flowers or fall colors.

It’s not the worst idea, Norway Maples maybe aren’t the worst invasive species but there are certainly far better native options, and if the city is offering to do everything for free to make it easier to replace the sidewalks, yeah might as well go for it. They’re not in the greatest of shape anyway, not in dire need but probably will decline while you live there

No bad choices really. One thing to consider with a walnut is the fruit can be messy to some and good foraging to others. I’d put any tree as far from the sidewalk/ utility as you feel comfortable to avoid having to prune half the canopy away like those did and eventually having the roots unending the sidewalks slabs.

Realistically some native oak or maple specifically adapted to your region. I think Tulip trees look cool but their wood can be weak. I also personally really like shag bark
    Hickory.

Another cool idea is getting an American elm x Chinese disease resistant elm hybrid as American elms are rare due to disease.

But yeah oak or maple are definitely the best, most adaptable options. Just kind of boring in my opinion lol.

Edit: I would not recommend black walnut because it is so close to street you will a bunch of nuts on the road and in your front yard. If you don’t mind though it would help native wildlife. But you could accomplish the same with less mess with Shagbark Hickory.
