The town operates such gardens at Pleasant Street and East Street, and plots are available on a first-come, first-served basis this year.

Applications for a garden space can be obtained from the Southington Planning Department at 196 North Main St. or through the town’s website.

Officials said only one application per family will be accepted, and garden spaces are limited to Southington residents.

The Southington Community Garden Association manages and maintains the town’s community garden sites under its established rules and bylaws.

According to the association, the program is intended to create and maintain productive gardens for residents while promoting organic gardening and responsible land-use practices.

The gardens also aim to encourage community involvement and provide educational opportunities about sustainable gardening, organizers said.
