We’re almost halfway through March, and Britain has been seeing some fleeting bursts of sunshine as winter comes to an end. While temperatures haven’t quite reached sunbathing levels yet, with any luck it won’t be too long before we’re able to spend time outdoors with loved ones once again.

Quality garden furniture is essential for those who like hosting during the warmer seasons. However, homeowners with outdoor tables and chairs are being advised to complete one crucial job before April arrives.

The task itself is quick, but could come in very handy down the line.

James Bentley, director at British garden furniture supplier Charles Bentley, urges all Brits to give their garden furniture a thorough clean before spring gets underway, reports the Express.

He explained: “As the days get longer and the weather starts to warm up, now is the perfect time to consider getting your garden furniture ready for spring. After months of cold, damp conditions, a little care and attention will have everything looking fresh and ready to enjoy as soon as the sunshine returns.”

Various types of furniture demand specific maintenance approaches, so here’s a brief guide on what’s needed depending on your particular style.

Wood

Hardwood furniture such as teak and oak is built to last, but its natural sheen can fade during the colder months. Begin by sweeping away loose dirt, then wash surfaces using warm soapy water with a soft brush or cloth.

For stubborn marks, use a specialist wood cleaner. Let the furniture dry completely before gently sanding any rough areas.

Treating it with a nourishing oil, such as teak oil, or a protective sealant will help revive its colour and shield it from sun damage and spring rainfall.

Metal

Aluminium and stainless steel frames are fairly easy to keep clean, but grime and surface stains can build up on them. Clean with gentle soapy water and dry using a soft cloth to avoid water marks.

Check for any chips in powder-coated finishes and repair these with matching paint to stop rust forming.

For wrought iron, get rid of any surface rust using fine sandpaper and apply an anti-rust treatment or protective wax for enhanced longevity.

Rattan and wicker

Synthetic rattan works brilliantly outdoors, but it can trap dust and debris within the weave. Use a soft brush or vacuum with a brush attachment to clear dirt, then clean with warm soapy water.

Natural rattan needs a more delicate touch, so avoid soaking it and make sure it dries fully in a well-ventilated space to avoid mildew. Inspecting the frame beneath for any deterioration will also guarantee your set is solid and ready for action.

Cushions and fabrics

Even when kept indoors, cushions can become covered in dust during the winter. Always check care labels and wash removable covers following the manufacturer’s guidelines.

For covers that can’t be removed, spot clean with warm soapy water and let them air dry completely. Using a fabric protector spray can help shield against spills and light rain throughout the spring and summer months.
